Waste Reduction throughMetal Recovery

Sajóbábony, Hungary – March 3, 2016 A new investment is being implemented at ÉMK Ltd., located in the Sajóbábony Chemical Industrial Park, with the support of the Norwegian Fund. The project focuses on the recovery of ferrous metals from slag generated after the incineration of hazardous waste, thereby reducing the amount of residual waste. More than 37% of the project cost is financed by the investor from its own funds, while the remaining HUF 159,004,951 is provided by the Kingdom of Norway under the Norwegian Financial Mechanism 2009–2014. Founded in 2000, ÉMK Northern Hungary Environmental Protection Ltd. is one of Hungary’s leading environmental service providers. Its core activities include hazardous waste disposal and wastewater treatment. The company is licensed to collect, transport, pre-treat, and dispose of both hazardous and non-hazardous waste.

However, the slag contains a significant amount of ferrous metal, which is not classified as hazardous waste and is therefore suitable for recycling.

The project, launched in November 2014, aims to develop and implement a technology at ÉMK Kft. for recovering metal waste that was previously not utilized. With the introduction of this new technology, a smaller amount of slag will be deposited in ÉMK Kft.’s hazardous waste landfill, thus extending its lifespan while reducing environmental impact. Thanks to the equipment procured, the transportation of the resulting waste can be carried out with roughly one-third the truck mileage previously required, which in turn reduces pollutant emissions. The sale of the recovered scrap metal improves the company’s efficiency, enhances financial stability, and strengthens its ability to retain jobs. All of this is achieved while reducing ÉMK Kft.'s environmental footprint—contributing both directly and indirectly to the improvement of the quality of life for the local population.
